Name: Rey
Age: 19
Canon: Star Wars
History: Wookieepedia has a fantastic summary.
Canon Point: At the conclusion of The Last Jedi/Episode VIII. I'll also be using material from Rey's Survival Guide to flesh out parts of her character and history that weren't covered in the films.
Material Regains:
★ Her journal, full of notes about life on Jakku and drawings.
★ A portion of freeze-dried food
★ A blanket
★ A beacon, worn like a bracelet (and, obviously, nothing more than a pretty bracelet now)
★ Two halves of a broken lightsaber (I know the 'saber is a weapon, but this one has been ripped in two; it's basically just a pair of useless bits of metal.)
Basic alignment:
There's a tendency in the Star Wars fandom to label Rey a cinnamon roll, and a 'Rey of sunshine' - I don't necessary disagree with the assessment, but the overall picture of her character isn't so black and white. (That, and trying to use the fandom to get a true reading on a character is Asking For Trouble, so.)
Overall, Rey is a good person who underwent a traumatic childhood and still managed to come out the other side in one piece, without being (understandably) turned into a Sith Lord. She's shown to choose the righteous path whenever it is offered to her, working off her own innate moral code. This is all the more impressive when you consider that she had literally no positive role models growing up - if anything, she had the opposite, and it would have been far easier for her to turn into the self-centred, ruthless scavenger-type that surrounded her. Instead, she became the sort of person who would take the time to give long-dead pilots a proper burial, and save the lives of fellow Jakku residents who had tried to rob her just minutes before, and would likely not show her the same good will if the roles were reversed. Her heart, at its core, is kind.
This, however, does not mean that she is a bleeding heart or a pushover - she will fight back if attacked, with every desire to emerge the victor, and has no issue with throwing the first punch if she feels she is justified in doing so (i.e. when she discovered Luke had lied to her about his history with Kylo Ren, and when BB-8 told her that Finn had stolen Poe's jacket). She also has no issue with hurting people - even killing them, as she did to Snoke's Elite Praetorian Guards - if she deems it necessary, although she takes no pleasure from it. At the end of the day, one of them is going to end up dead - she simply wants to ensure it is not her.
The world of Star Wars - particularly for those blessed with the power of the Force, as Rey is - tends to be divided into the Light and the Dark, with the general consensus being that the Dark side is the Bad Side. Overall, Rey appears to be a being of the Light - she works to protect those who can't protect themselves (like BB-8), will put herself in harms way if it is for the good of the universe (like when she shipped herself right to the heart of the First Order on the chance that she could turn the tide of the war), and genuinely wants to do the right thing. However, there's an undercurrent of darkness that runs through her soul, powered by her overwhelming desire to learn the fate of her parents and the reason they left her to a woeful life on Jakku. When the Dark Side offered her the chance to receive the information she wanted, she - to the horror of Luke Skywalker - followed it immediately. Rey also fights with screaming, emotional ferocity not usually seen amongst Light users; it's the Dark side that uses feelings as fuel, yet Rey has no issue with tapping into her rage to allow herself to win.
These dark-side tendencies, however, do not erase the fact that Rey is a good person who hates seeing injustice and suffering of the innocent, and will put everything she has into ensuring that those aligned with the Dark do not allow their shadows to consume everything in their path - even if she has a few shadows of her own.
tl;dr - Rey is indeed a cinnamon roll, but a rather spicy one, and if I had to use a D&D alignment to (roughly) describe her, I'd choose Lawful Good.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
✔ Optimistic - It would have been incredibly easy for Rey to succumb to the horrid atmosphere of Jakku, and not survive her childhood - the main thing that kept her going was her optimistic belief that her situation was only temporary; that eventually, she would be reunited with the parents that left her there (for whatever extremely good reason they did so). This got her through every miserable situation that she had to endure on Jakku, from starvation to assault to the elements - she survived, and developed the skills to do so, purely from the power of her hope. Said hope was also the main factor around her decision to deliver herself right into the hands of Kylo Ren, and therefore the First Order; through her visions, she saw that there was potential for Ren to return to the Light, rendering him the Resistance's only hope now that Luke Skywalker was refusing to join the battle. While her adventures with Ren didn't quite end up how she desired, they did result in the death of Supreme Leader Snoke - a massive blow to the First Order's power that came about through Rey's refusal to do anything but believe that her and Ren were on the same side.
✔ Resourceful - Rey was given nothing when she started life on Jakku, yet she managed to create not only a permanent shelter for herself, but one equipped with resources that allowed her to learn piloting skills and even other languages. She taught herself how the mechanical aspects of the fallen ships worked, rather than just being content with ripping them to pieces, which allowed her to build and maintain her own mode of transport, and even rebuild a ship to the point where it was air (space?)-worthy. Despite having nothing, she fought to create herself some semblance of a life, teaching herself valuable skills that ended up being instrumental in her eventual escape from Jakku. She is also able to come up with solutions on the fly - when Finn was taken by the Rathtars on Han Solo's cargo ship, Rey quickly came up with a (successful) plan to save him (it may have been her fault that the creatures escaped in the first place, but...details). She has a talent for turning nothing into something, which will serve her well when she's stranded in the world of Pokemon.
✔ Courageous - Throughout her story so far, Rey has shown herself to be a person unafraid to back down or avoid doing something because it may be dangerous or not work out the way she'd planned; when left alone with Kylo Ren at the end of Episode VII, she didn't flee or beg for mercy, despite the fact that he appeared to be so much stronger than her and would probably kill her with ease. She was also more than willing to travel into the heart of the First Order on the chance that Kylo Ren could turn back to the light, without any concern for her own wellbeing. To her, the opportunity to potentially turn the tide of the war was worth the personal danger. Rey was also intimately involved in the final battle on Crait; her and Chewie were happy to take the majority of the First Order's gunfire - despite the risk it entailed - in order to protect their fellow Resistance fighters. It's this courage that will allow Rey to handle whatever Sinnoh may throw at her - as best she can, anyway.
✖ Naive - Kylo Ren tells Rey that her greatest weakness is the fact that she can't let go of her parents; of the idea that they left her on Jakku for noble reasons and have every intention of reuniting with her, rather than the (far more likely) explanation that they simply abandoned her through lack of interest or for money. He's right - even though her optimistic belief in her parents allowed her to survive on Jakku instead of perishing, she is still stubbornly convinced that they will return to her long after she's left the planet, and even after Maz Kanata tries (in a somewhat more gentle manner than Ren) to tell her that they were never coming back for her. They play on her mind, and Rey's dependence on them - her desperate belief that they always loved her and found it incredibly hard to abandon her - is almost childlike in it's naivety. Throughout the events of Episode XIII she seems to come to terms with the fact that they were not good people and never really cared for her, but there's no indication that she's completely discarded her belief - time will tell. For now, they remain a significant crack in her emotional armour - one that allows the Dark Side to seep in unchecked.
✖ Lonely - Rey grew up isolated and without anyone who cared about her as a person, or offered her any emotional support. As strong as she is and despite how much she tries to hide it, her loneliness affects her greatly and leaves her open to manipulation. So deep is her pain that she ended up opening up emotionally to Kylo Ren, despite the fact that he was her enemy and had caused her great harm. When he was able to empathise with her suffering and ensure her that she was not as alone as she felt, it was enough to get her to turn against Luke Skywalker and leave Ahch-To immediately to see him - even though it meant she handed herself right to Snoke. While Kylo Ren's intentions were not as diabolical as they could have been, Rey's weakness for affection and understanding leaves her a target for those with more sinister intentions (such as Snoke). She's so unused to people treating her kindly that she tends to cling to those who do, and give them her undying loyalty (like Leia, and her Resistance), regardless of whether or not they have her best interests at heart.
Fortunately, one can assume Leia does.
✖ Underdeveloped social skills - Rey did not have any friends growing up, let alone people her own age to spend time with, nor has she had the opportunity to learn the many soft skills required for general socialising. Her main social interactions throughout her life have been with Unkar Plutt and his goons, and it can be assumed that none of their conversations were particularly warm. Initially, Rey was quite short - almost aggressive - with BB-8 and Finn, but over time her prickly nature softened, and her interactions with her new friends in the Resistance have helped her become a more warm person. Regardless, being in the larger Sinnoh cities - even with the less-than-normal inhabitants - will surround her with more people than she has ever seen in her life, and it may be overwhelming for her. That, and the fact that her lack of experience with small talk and friend-making could backfire and cause her to accidentally push away someone she was genuinely trying to befriend. On the flip side, it will give her a good opportunity to interact with people without the burden of intergalactic war hanging over her every conversation.
Skills and Abilities:
Since Azume will be stripping her of her Magical Space Powers (i.e. the Force), I'm going to focus on her more practical/relevant skills:
Physical Combat - Whether it's with a staff or a lightsaber, Rey has proven herself to be quite adept in combat. She's able to fight off Unkar Plutt's henchmen when they try to steal BB-8 from her, hold her own against Kylo Ren in the snowy forest of Starkiller Base (despite it being the first time she'd ever held a lightsaber), and defeat a number of Snoke's Elite Praetorian Guards without receiving any major injuries. She's not afraid to defend herself - her instinct usually switches to fight, rather than flight (unless she's fighting something like a Rathtar, in which case....flight will be the option, she's not an idiot), and she'll push through any injuries as best she can until the battle is over. Her experience with needing to defend herself also means that she will not hesitate to hurt a person - or thing - that means to cause her harm.
Hopefully, she'll quickly learn that her Pokemon are meant to be doing the fighting, instead of her.
Mechanics - While the technology in the Pokemon world will be different to what she's used to, Rey will take great pleasure in figuring out how it all works; she's developed a talent for being able to repair and rebuild most mechanical things through her experiences with the Ship Graveyard on Jakku. When on the Millennium Falcon with Finn, and later Han and Chewie, she was able to avert a deadly gas leak and undo a modification that was putting strain on a critical part of the ship. She was also able to build herself a working speeder out of nothing but scavenged parts, which became essential to her continued survival on the barren desert planet.
If she does attempt to tinker with any of the tech in Azume, I'll ensure I touch base with the mod team and ensure she only does what would be acceptable/realistic!
Survival - Rey has spent most of her life fighting to survive in a barren, violent desert, where her only food depended on what she could scavenge from the corpses of fallen ships, and water was scarce. She managed to build herself a reliable shelter to protect herself from the elements, and is used to going without food for long periods of time if necessary. Having to travel from city to city in Sinnoh - along the routes full of vegetation, water sources and a distinct lack of murderous sandstorms - will feel like a holiday. Ironically, though, it's the vegetation that may cause her issues; she's had no real experience with any sorts of forest or plains, so the abundance of green stuff may cause her to need said survival skills and resourcefulness more than first thought.
And for something more lighthearted, she's also quite the artist.
Sample:
Day: 71
Location: Snowpoint City
I'm still not sure how I feel about snow. It's strange; this isn't the first time that I've seen it, but it still feels like the first time. I don't think I even registered its existence when I was on Starkiller Base - although, to be fair, I had other things on my mind. In a way it's nice to be able to really experience it, although if I have to be honest, I'd much rather be back in a desert. Snow is beautiful, but I am so. bloody. COLD!! I actually think I cried with relief when Snowpoint City came into view - not that you'd be able to tell, since I think my tears froze solid on my cheeks.
The city itself is lovely, but unfortunately the locals are the same as those down south. Maybe it's just how people are on this planet. I can't say I like it.
Regardless of that (and the cold), I do want to spend a bit of time in this area. The locals say there's a temple to the north of the city, where only the chosen may enter. I might be being a bit ridiculous, since there hasn't been any indication that this planet - world? - has any connection with the Jedi, but I still think it's worth the trek. I'm so desperate for a sign that I haven't just disappeared entirely into another universe. I haven't felt the Force since I woke up here, and no one seems to know what I'm talking about when I ask about ships, the First Order or the Resistance.
I feel like I'm trapped on Jakku all over again, even if the company is admittedly much better. Piplup still hasn't evolved (I don't think he wants to - doesn't bother me either way), but Meditite has. I keep forgetting that her name is Medicham now, but I don't think she minds all that much.
I probably shouldn't waste too much more time on this; I need to buy supplies for the journey to the temple. I know I shouldn't get my hopes up too high, but...I can't help it. What if it really IS an ancient Jedi temple? What if I'm actually here for a reason, and it was the Force that brought me here? That's all I want, really. A reason. One that doesn't come down to drinking money. It could be locked away in that temple, and I intend to find it.
Once I warm up a bit more, anyway.
Entrance tax: May the Force be with you!
